Home Remedy: Hiccups

Hiccups are involuntary contractions from your diaphragm that is followed by a quick closing of your vocal cords. Scientifically, the causes are unknown but there are some triggers. Some common causes of hiccups are:

  • Alcohol

  • Chewing gum

  • Drinking too fast

  • Eating too fast

  • Large meals

  • Smoking

While hiccups normally subside on their own without treatment, here are a few tips, tricks and home remedies you can try.

  • Chamomile or Peppermint Tea - These herbal teas can help relieve muscle spasms that causes hiccups.

  • Hold Your Breath - Theory suggests that increasing carbon dioxide levels can help stop hiccups. You can also increase your carbon dioxide level by breathing into a paper bag.

  • Peanut Butter - The process of eating something sticky like a teaspoon of peanut butter can help disrupt the hiccups cycle.

  • Water - Drinking water can help disrupt the cycle of hiccups.

Although hiccups aren't due to underlying conditions, consult your physician if you have hiccups for two days or more, have difficulty breathing, eating or sleeping.
