Home & Herbal Remedies for Muscle Cramps

Updated: May 21, 2023

One of the most common and bothersome physical ailments that humans experience is muscle cramps. Unfortunately, there is no single remedy for muscle cramps as the pain and discomfort can vary from person to person and even in the same person from episode to episode. However, there are a variety of home and herbal remedies that can provide relief from the pain and discomfort of muscle cramps.

One of the most commonly recommended home remedies for muscle cramps is to stretch the affected area. Stretching the area can help to reduce muscle tightness and release tension. Additionally, it is important to maintain adequate hydration as dehydration can contribute to cramping. It is recommended that individuals above the age of 19 drink at least 8 glasses of water per day to stay hydrated. Additionally, individuals can replenish electrolytes by drinking fluids like sports drinks.

Herbal remedies can also be beneficial in providing relief from the pain and discomfort of muscle cramps. Several herbs, such as ginger, garlic, chamomile, and valerian, have long been used to treat muscle cramps. Research suggests that ginger can reduce inflammation and that garlic can act as an antioxidant to help reduce pain and inflammation. Furthermore, chamomile tea can reduce pain, swelling, and inflammation and valerian can be used to reduce stress, which can contribute to muscle cramps.

Magnesium supplementation can also be helpful in treating muscle cramps. Magnesium is an important mineral that helps the body with various metabolic processes, muscles, and even nerve functions. Magnesium can be found in several dietary sources such as leafy greens, nuts, whole grains, and legumes, however, individuals may find it beneficial to take a supplement as well.

Foam rolling is another home remedy that can provide relief from muscle cramps. Foam rolling, or self-myofascial release, is a type of massage performed on the body, typically with a foam roller, to help relieve tension in the muscles. The massage helps to release trigger points in the muscles, which can reduce pain and discomfort.

Finally, warm compresses and/or heating pads can help to lessen the pain of muscle cramps. Warm compresses can assist with reducing muscle tension, and adding heat such as with a heating pad can provide additional relief.

When dealing with muscle cramps, it is important to consult with a healthcare provider. In some cases, medical treatment may be necessary to completely resolve the issue, however, in many cases, home and herbal remedies can provide relief from the pain and discomfort of muscle cramps. With a combination of hydration, stretching, and natural remedies, individuals can find relief from muscle cramps.
